It’s time for another installment in our series Unpublished. As I said previously, we all have them. Photos that we forgot we took, photos that have been languishing in our archive waiting for us to rediscover them. Oh yes there are also the ones that we originally did not think much of, but upon further review realize hey that’s a pretty good shot.
Ok, I was reminded of this shot from 2011 during this years Rolex 24. Upon seeing a Corvette give this gesture to a BMW who ran into him, I remembered I had seen this before. Here it was Ernesto Viso expressing his displeasure with James Hinchcliffe at Mid Ohio.
This is the end result when a cars steering breaks at the apex of a turn you are shooting. I say end result because this shot was taken a few seconds after the crash. I’ll admit it when a speeding race car comes barreling straight at the spot I’m standing, I run away. At the spot where I was standing, there was two tire barriers, a rubber barrier holding them in place, and a concrete retaining wall. All were moved five inches on impact. That’s why I did not want to be standing there at that particular moment.
My mother always told me to stay away from fast women. However for these two I’ll make an exception. Kathrine Legg and Christina Nielsen are toe of the fastest women on the planet.
Those intrepid, ever present safety crews clearing up the track, and doing whatever is necessary to provide a safe racing environment for drivers and spectators alike. They never seem to get the attention they deserve. They are racings Silent Service.
